Note: If you're not sure what a web page is, refer to our web introduction before continuing here. It's a good idea to have a little background before tackling web authoring.
Every semester, hundreds of UF students take classes in the NWE. Many of them have to make web pages. Did you know that many of them do not know anything about web design before coming to the NWE? It's true. At first, they don't know a thing about web design, yet they are soon producing beautiful web pages (okay, maybe not beautiful).
How could they do this? Are they all advanced Computer Science majors? No. They do it because making web pages is easy, once you get the hang of it. In order to help you get the hang of it quickly, the NWE provides you with these help pages.
Each of the pages in the web authoring section will give you useful information about making web pages.
- Files and URLs
- Explains how the files you save, web pages and images, show up on the web. It is essential to understand how the file-system translates to URL (Uniform Resource Location).
- Differences
- HTML is a variable language that allows the user (and her browser) to decide how to view web pages. It is important to take the differences in the way browsers display into consideration when you make your web pages.
- asWe Tutorial
- The tutorial shows you how to make a web page step-by-step. It should take about an hour to complete. You will notice that the tutorial repeats certain points. These points emphasize simple procedures, like always saving your file in your public_html directory, that often trip up beginners.
- HTML
- The HTML section is organized by topic, rather than as a tutorial. It will prove especially useful to you after you have gone through the asWe tutorial. The HTML section explains many of the common tags you will want to use in your web pages and how to use them.
- asWe Help
- The asWe help is a topical explanation of how to use the asWe HTML Editor. It will be especially useful to those who have already gone through our asWe Tutorial, which explains how to use the program.
You will notice that there are many other useful sections in the web authoring help pages. Explore them to learn even more. Enjoy!
