Here are your options for creating web content, in order of complexity. Click on the name of the program for documentation. The NWE staff recommends you use asWe to edit web pages.
| Program name | Mouse use? | Help screens? | How to start | Comments |
| Pico | No | Yes | Select "Pico text editor" from "Other programs" in the NWE menu, or type pico at a shell | Very simple text-based text editor. Can only open one file at a time, and commands are a bit arcane. Good for those accessing the system from home. |
| asWe | Yes | Yes | Select the HTML editor in the NWE menu | Excellent choice for beginning users and experienced NWE-ers alike. Great online help and word-processor feel. |
| emacs | Yes | Yes | Pick "Emacs text editor" from "Other programs" in the NWE menu, or type emacs & at a shell | Extremely powerful but somewhat difficult to use text editor. Best only for experienced users or NWE instructors. |
