NWE Help: Web Authoring: ASWE Introduction

NWE Home :: Help :: Web :: Authoring :: ASWE

AsWe (a simple Web editor) is a basic HTML editor. Much of the writing we do in the Networked Writing Environment is published on the World Wide Web, and HTML is the special language which allows us to distribute documents over the web.

To create HTML pages, one can just type some text, and add the HTML codes by hand, but that requires more time and effort than is really necessary. AsWe is loaded with almost exactly the right amount of helpful HTML composition tools to make HTML coding fast--without making it complicated.

For those of you who aren't used to text-based HTML editors, there is a real adjustment to working with a plain-text editor such as asWe: you will need to learn to preview your work often by loading it up in Mozilla. (We will further explain previewing later, but don't use the preview button.)

Some tips for learning asWe:

  • Start simple. Don't try to make a complex document right away.
  • Use the tool tips--hold your mouse button over any button to see what it does.
  • Ask your instructor for a demo if you're still confused.

The first time you launch asWe you will need to approve the license.

See our editor types page for more information about the different types of HTML editors available at home and in the NWE.
