NWE Help: Remote: Remote Access

NWE Home :: Help :: Remote

From most remote locations, your ability to access the NWE is somewhat restricted. That's because it's not possible to transfer enough information over phone lines to enable X windows. If you're using dialup, you'll have to be content with the text-only display the shell provides.

However, you can get most of the applications used in the NWE, or applications much like then, for your home computer. You can then do most of your work on the home computer and use FTP (file transfer protocol) to upload your completed work to the NWE servers.

You can get many of the software programs listed here from the UF Software CD.

Here's a table of applications and equivalents:

NWE application Windows 95/98/NT/XP MacOS Notes
File Manager Windows Explorer Finder You may not need to manage files at home, but it's a good idea to understand how.
Firefox
Mozilla or Firefox
Web browsing from home will be slower than in the NWE, but should be very similar otherwise. If you're using Mozilla or Firefox to make web pages, use ftp, not HTTP-PUT, to publish them to NWE servers.
Email reader (Thunderbird) Thunderbird documented on NWE help. Connecting with the SSH client Putty and using Pine is another option.
asWe HTML editor Arachnophilia BBedit Lite Many word processors have HTML editing modes. There are LOTS of options out there. Try shareware.com for more info.
tkMOO-lite tkMOO MudWalker You can also use ssh to connect to the NWE and type tf for a simple MOO client.
StarOffice The Open Source Project's Open Office, or Sun's StarOffice Almost all word processors are expensive proprietary software. StarOffice, which we use in the NWE, and OpenOffice are welcome exceptions. Give them a try.

Please let us know if any of these programs or the links to them do not function well.
