Gimp startup window Click for full size

Start the program by clicking on the NWE menu, selecting "Graphics Programs" and then "The Gimp." After a short delay, a window will appear that looks like this:

You can also start The Gimp from a shell by opening the Xterm window and typing

gimp &

After a moment, the Gimp window will open.

Tool Palette
After the startup window closes, you will see a tool palette. This palette is the main menu for the Gimp. Notice that it has "File" and "Help" menus at the top of the window.

The palette is not only the main menu, it also has a variety of features available in button form. Hold your mouse over the buttons to see "tool tips" about how to use them.
