Sometimes, you will want to make use of a predefined pattern for a background, a fill, or a drawing. Gimp has several predefined patterns available to use.

To select a pattern, click the pattern square in the upper right of the lower-right box on the Gimp palette. The pattern square in the image shown here is an orange box with small boxes inside it.

When you click the pattern square, the pattern selection dialog window will open. To select a pattern to use, click on it. The orange square in the pattern indicator (on the main palette) will change to reflect your new selection.

Once you have selected a pattern to use, you can use the fill tool or the clone tool to put the pattern in your image. To use the fill tool, make sure that you are on pattern fill rather than FG (foreground) or BG (background) fill. You can check to see what type of fill you're using by double-clicking the fill tool icon, which brings up a dialog box and you can choose your fill type.
