Gimp has many different brushes available for you to use when you're painting. To determine which brush is currently selected, refer to the lower-right panel of the Gimp main tool palette. The brush selected is the black shape (as shown at right); in our example, a circular brush has been selected.

To switch which brush you're going to use, click the brush in the display. The Brush selection dialog will open (shown below).

The icons in the main box show the shape of the brush selected. You can use one of the pre-made brushes or create one yourself (using the "new" button).

The brush head you select will be the size and shape of the paint tool and the erase tool. The "spacing" slider bar controls how often Gimp 'stamps' the brush head. If you keep spacing set to a low number, painted lines will look solid. If you set spacing higher, there will be gaps in the line. Note the example below.
