One of my images is not showing up on my web page. How do I find it?
Here are the two most common causes for missing images:
  1. The image is not in the public_html directory. If it is not in your public_html directory, the image is not visible to the web.
  2. The HTML code for the image has a typo. Make sure the name and the extension (.gif or .jpg) for the image are correct.

I only want to use part of one of my images; how do I crop it?
You can use almost any of our image-manipulation programs to crop an image. Perhaps the easiest way is to use XV. Simply load your image, use the mouse to select the area you want to keep and click the "crop" button. See the help for the program you are using for more detailed answers.

How do I make an image smaller?
You need to scale the image down to the size you want. You can use any of our graphics programs to do this. Perhaps the easiest way is with dtimage. To scale an image using dtimage, open the image with dtimage then adjust the percentage of the scale dialog as needed.

I'm having problems opening an image. What gives?
Two possible problems. First, if you transferred the file to the NWE from elsewhere with ftp, did you use binary mode? If you used text mode, you may have corrupted the image.

Second, does the image have the right extension? If an image is labelled "filename.jpg" and it's really a different format (e.g. not a jpeg), some programs may have trouble opening it. Rename the image without an extension and see if xv or ImageMagick can open it up.
