I personally believe that the house is alive with the help of the people living there. When no one is there, the house (or at least I think) remains like a normal house. Yet, when people live there the house changes and portrays their perceptions and fears.

Without the people, the house would not live. Or maybe it lives and stays unconscious because it has no input from anyone. Well, whatever the case may be I believe that the monster is a manifestation fromm their mind. The monster is not physically there but mentally, the monster is following them and tormenting them. Which would make sense because the monster, unless you stop believing in one, will always be following you.

I also think that the other people who use to live in the house also saw the Great Hall and the stairway. Now, someone made a good point - why didn't Navy call all of those people who use to live there?

I guess that is a question that might never be answered.
