Since I still believe the house projects mental images of what you expect (or don't want to see) to see. I believe that everyone being together seeing the stairway and believing that it was there made it 'real'. To add to that I also believe that when the house was moving and changing it was just reflecting the change in perceptions that people had in the house. For instance it began small and grew larger with the more time they spent exploring the space. Then when they had explored the space it started to shrink rapidly after they began to realize they could travel through the space and still find their way home.
