I think that the house is alive only becasue the people who explore it make it alive. Becuase if Navy and them never went inside they house wouldn't have expanded and contracted accoring to thier perceptions. It would have stayed the same. Or maybe you can think that the house was asleep until they came inside and woke it up. I really don't know what i think becuase every time i think i know what i am talking about another theory pops into my head. I guess that's the purpose of the book though. But as for the monster - i don't think there is really a monster inside there - well maybe there is - i just don't know. Maybe its a good monster and is trying to sacre them out because it knows what will happen to them if they stay there. Yeah ... that sounds good!
There is definitly a good monster inside of the house trying to scare them out.
